A three-day itinerant trek to discover the Pays de La Meije
An invitation to discover in a small group the stunning Pays de La Meije during this great traverse across the Haute-Romanche. Three days of trekking during which you will visit the treasures of this alpine valley. The starting point will be Besse en Oisans, a village from which we will hike up to the magnificent Plateau d'Emparis, an impressive balcony on La Meije massif. Our journey will continue through the hamlets above La Grave, before reaching Arsine and the valley of the Romanche sources. The final stop of this great traverse will be a well-deserved dip in the Great Baths of Monêtier.
The meeting point is in front of the Bureau des Guides of la Grave or in Besse en Oisans. We drive to Besse (for the people who do not have a car, please contact us) and discover the authentic village of Besse en Oisans, with its preserved traditional architecture. Then, we gradually hike up to the Plateau d'Emparis in a lush green environment. We journey across those wild open spaces dotted with lakes. The lakes Noir and Lérié are stunning mirrors of the massif of La Meije. We spend the night in a bed and breakfast in Chazelet or in the Grande Buffe mountain hut.
1000m of elevation gain - about 15km of hiking.
Starting from Chazelet, we hike through some of the five hamlets called 'Traverses' overlooking the village of La Grave at 1800 meters above sea level. Les Hières, Valfroide, Ventelon, Les Terrasses and Chazelet have preserved their traditional stone architecture and boast cultural curiosities. They form a magnificent balcony over the north face of the La Meije massif. Then, we hike down to La Grave before reaching Villar d'Arène and Arsine. The path winds up and crosses the Pas d'Anna Falque, the gateway to the Haute-Romanche valley. We journey across a bucolic setting of alpine meadows and reach the Alpe de Villar d'Arène mountain hut (2079m).
750m of elevation gain - about 17km of hiking.
Night in the hut.
The path gradually winds up to the Col d'Arsine and quickly reaches the beautiful lake of the Arsine glacier (2465m). It is the opportunity to observe an interesting geological oddity: the tip of the glacier forms an ice cliff plunging into a lake fed by melted water of the glacier. We continue our hike, following the Petit Tabuc stream down to the Casset hamlet in a bucolic setting. We eventually enjoy a well-deserved dip in the Grands Bains de Monêtier. It is our final stop of this magnificent three-day traverse, during which we admired the natural and cultural diversity of the Haute-Romanche area.
1100m of elevation gain - about 16km of hiking.
A taxi will take us back to la Grave.
