A long even icefall with a magnificent ending on the Plateau d'Emparis
The icefall of Caturgeas, which is located on the south side of the Malaval valley, is not only one of the most aesthetic ice lines around la Grave but it is also one of the most technically accessible. There is virtually no approach walk and we quickly find ourselves immersed in the wild atmosphere of the place. The whole of the icefall is quite homogeneous, its line being only separated by two snowy flat sections of several meters each. The first part happens to be the most difficult but not too challenging, with large rock sections and ice pillars. As for the second part, it is a mix of couloirs and gullies, the last pitch finishes on the Plateau d'Emparis. From there, we will enjoy a stunning view of the Meije massif and hike via the Plateau d'Emparis back down to the village of Chazelet. Grade: 3+ Vertical: +800m/+2624ft (+600m/+1968ft of ice climbing)
