EXPERIENCE Winter alpinism

Pic de la Grave (3628m/11,902ft)

A stunning summit within the surrounding massifs and an ideal introduction to winter alpinism

Located above the Girose glacier, the Pic de la Grave (3628m/11,902ft) is a magnificent peak that looks out over the Ecrins and Oisans mountain ranges. Ascending it in winter is a good introduction to this type of alpinism, for the approach is short and the technical level is accessible. The minimal vertical and the absence of very steep slopes are also ideal to learn the technique of walking roped up with crampons. The lift of la Grave-la Meije takes us to the Col des Ruillans (3200m/10,498ft), the starting point of our climb. Located at the other end of the Girose glacier, our goal is clearly in sight. We quickly set foot on the glacier and begin our climb roped up. The first part is fairly long and gentle, leading us to the base of the final slope. We start ascending the north face of the peak by climbing over the bergschrund, which is the crux of the route (40-45°). Above this point, the slope becomes more gentle and leads us to a short northwest ridge. Its climb is both pleasant and technically easy. We quickly reach the summit and from there, we can enjoy a stunning panorama over the whole of the Girose glacier, the Barre des Ecrins and the National Park around, the Grandes Rousses massif, and even Mont Blanc in the background. We climb down the same itinerary and quickly reach the Col des Ruillans, the starting point of our ascent. Vertical: +428m (1,404ft) / around 4 hours round-trip
