A gorgeous ridge course on an outstanding rock
The peaks of Grande Ruine, Pointe Brevoort, Pic Maître, Roche Méane are located in the heart of the Oisans region, at the source of the Romanche river. The Pointe Brevoort derives its name from American alpinist Margaret 'Meta' Brevoort, the aunt of William Auguste Coolidge, a renowned historian and mountaineer. Together, they achieved the first ascent of that peak on the 19th of July 1873. We will reach this wild place hiking up the Romanche valley and spending the night in the remote Adèle Planchard mountain hut. The summit of the Pointe Breevort, without technical difficulties and accessible to many alpinists, offers stunning views over the Ecrins range, with its central location between La Meije and the Barre des Ecrins.
We start our itinerary from Arsine and hike up the picturesque valley of the Romanche river until 2300m to reach the wild valley of the Plate des Agneaux. That particular place is the beginning of an invisible glacier, almost entirely covered with rocks. The path gradually becomes steeper and winds up until the Adèle Planchard mountain hut. From the hut, we can enjoy a majestic view over the summit of the Barre des Ecrins arising behind a rock wall.
1500m vertical from Arsine to the Adèle Planchard mountain hut (3169m) - about 5 hours.
Night in the hut.
From the Adèle Planchard mountain hut, we set foot on the glacier Supérieur des Agneaux and cross it towards the west, hiking up a steep slope just beneath the south ridge of Roche Méane. We reach the base of the southeast ridge and cross the bergschrund, which may vary with snow conditions. Then, the climbing is fairly easy and the itinerary follows the thin line of the ridge. The key section is an exposed step but the rock quality is excellent. The ridge eventually gets flat and leads to the summit of the Pointe Breevort. The way down follows the same itinerary.
600m vertical from the mountain hut to the summit - about 3 hours.
